Roller chain and components

Chain : A chain is consisting of inner links and outer links. As to be seen on the above drawing, bush and pin are causing the joint movements. The chain parts are produced from different materials. Generally hardened, case-hardened and alloyed steel.

Plates : Hardened steel is used for avoiding breaks on the plates. For the chain to become break resistance, depending on the type and specification of the chain, hardening process is applied.

Pins : Because of the cylindrical form of the pins, the surface and other parts is under constant pressure. To increase wear ressistance case-hardened steel is used for hardening and making the pins more effective. Pins support all the load acting on the chain, together with inner and outer plates, and when the chain is engaged with a sprocket, the pins slide as bearings. They are required to be high in shearing strength and bending strength, and especially wear resistance.

Bushes : The bushes are also hardened on the inside and outside for wear resistance. Bushings act to prevent the shock received through rollers when the chain is engaged with a sprocket from being directly transmitted to pins, and also act as bearings, along with the pins. So, they are required to be high in shock fatigue strength and wear resistance.

Rollers : For a higher resistance pins are produced from hardened steel.
