Chain & Sprocket Calculation Guide (Formulas & Selection Criteria)

1. How to Calculate Sprocket Diameter?

For DIN 8187 (BS) and DIN 8188 (ASA) roller chain sprockets, pitch circle diameter is calculated as dp = p / sin(180° / Z), where p is pitch (mm) and Z is the number of teeth.

2. Tooth Count & Transmission Ratio Selection

To minimize polygon effect, noise and wear, a minimum of 17 teeth (19–25 for high speeds) is recommended on the driving sprocket. Single-stage transmission ratio (i = Z2 / Z1) should ideally not exceed 1:7.

3. Chain Length & Center Distance

Optimum center distance is typically 30 to 50 times the chain pitch (30p – 50p). Rounding the link count (X) to an even integer avoids offset links, while an odd tooth count on the pinion ensures uniform wear.

4. Technical Support Since 1960

Dinamik Zincir provides full engineering and stock support for Iwis, Eurochain, CZ Favorit, Ewart, DBC (Dong Bo), Renold, Ditton and custom conveyor chains & sprockets.
